Abstract: This talk explores the strangest known mosaic in the Roman world: an image of a man with the head of a chicken at Brading Roman Villa on the Isle of Wight. This image has attracted a dizzying range of explanations since its discovery in 1879 – alas, almost all wrong(-headed). It therefore offers an opportunity for a detective trail that will take us to some of the oddest – and most sinister – corners of the Roman world.
All welcome - please spread the word!
