The Derbyshire Classical Association

 

We are delighted to announce that we have been officially inaugurated by the Classical Association as the Derbyshire branch.  To celebrate, we're inviting you to our inaugural branch meeting on Monday 31 March, with a talk by our Honorary President, Professor Stephen Hodkinson on Ancient Sparta.  The meeting will once again take place in the main hall at Strutts Community Centre in Belper, with doors opening at 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start.

 

How do I get tickets for the Sparta talk?

Everyone attending the event should Register HERE.

We ask you to register so that we know how many people to expect on the night.  Tickets for the event will cost £5 (£2 for U-18s/ students).  U-16s must be accompanied by an adult.  You can pay on the night by cash or cheque, or make a payment online to: Derbyshire Classical Association. Sort Code: 40-19-15. Account number - 44772709.  Use your surname as the payment reference (you still need to register with Ticketsource).  

 

What's the talk about?

The talk is entitled 'Spartan Warriors? Modern Myths and Ancient Realities' and will take a critical look at the myths that have grown up about the ancient Greek community of Sparta. We'll also update you about plans for future DCA events.  Any pupils or teachers attending the event will be able to find out more about learning and teaching the ancient world - ask for co-chair Jane Ainsworth, who is also the East Midlands Regional Co-ordinator for the educational charity, Classics for All (Home | Classics For All East).
