Life in the Roman World
Life in the Roman World is a set of teaching resources focused on
investigating everyday life in Roman Britain. There are two courses, one set
designed to be appropriate for KS2, another for KS3 pupils. The resources
include carefully chosen information, key questions, and cross-curricular
enquiry tasks, with teacher support materials, on a wide range of topics:
from Julius Caesar’s invasion to food and drink; from life in the Roman army
to analysing ancient graves and their markers. Pupils investigate the impact
of Rome’s occupation of Britain through stories, word root tasks, and structured
tasks to analyse surviving primary evidence. All the resources are based on cutting-edge,
university-led research.
KS2 teachers of both Minimus and Maximum Classics will find a wealth of material to support their teaching of primary Latin as well as the Roman topics on the National Curriculum for History. The resources also show you how to focus on your own local Roman history. All the suggested tasks can be used as entries for CfA’s Olympus Challenge scheme and the Young Historian Ancient Civilisations Award, so you can celebrate and accredit your pupils’ learning too.
The KS3 resources are ideal for teachers as a local history topic, as well as a pre-1066 enquiry. You could also use them in after-school classics clubs, working towards CfA’s Olympus Challenge.
An appendix shows how tasks can also fit into the Cambridge Latin Course and Suburani for anyone teaching Latin. Schools already using the resources say that the combination of Word Root exercises with analysis of primary sources helps to develop pupils’ vocabulary and confidence in reading longer passages, as well as their critical analysis skills, as part of an aspirational curriculum.

Can I see some examples?
Yes, go to https://romanleicester.com/resources/resourcesforteachers
I don’t know much about Roman Britain or archaeology, can I still use the resources?
Yes! The book accompanying the resources and the PowerPoint presentations give beginner’s guides to working with material sources, as well as a framework of questions to scaffold pupils’
analysis. We can also deliver a free training session for you and your colleagues on working with primary sources, pitched appropriately for KS2 or KS3 staff. The session gives primary advice on teaching all periods of history through primary source material.
